I am glad to see someone mentioning a topic that is very dear to me. At an early age I was a listener of classical music but not interested in metal, which seemed to be filled with vapid and modern topics... until I discovered heavy metal and death metal bands that you mention, which captured the ancient spirit of barbarism and a sublime magic (Romanticism?) I had found in music such as, say, Wagner and Berlioz.

Life's structure can not be understood without the contemplation of meaning in death and suffering, but in modern context such as punk bands' critique or alternative rock's angst it is politicized and socialized - highlighting emotional details which get lost in the grander scheme, whereas even in more mundane heavy metal the raw motions of describing war and conquest proceed to a Faustian sense of space and will, a template where one can project the ordeals of daily life and find a sense of unity with nature and cosmos.

BTW: I see no captions for the boxes below "Leave a Reply", I checked with 2 different browsers.
